Minister: Rev'd Helen Pattie

Welcome to Drumchapel Essenside URC.

History

Essenside was founded as a Congregational Church in 1954, to minister to the residents of the then new housing estate of Drumchapel.  Members elected to change its name to Drumchapel Essenside URC when the Congregational Union of Scotland formally united with The United Reformed Church.

The United Reformed Church is one of the smaller mainstream churches in Britain, but despite its size remains fully committed to Christian Unity.

Worship

Essenside URC meets for worship on Sunday mornings at 11am for about an hour. Our Sunday School (known as ‘Livewires’) meets at the same time.

We celebrate the Sacrament of Holy Communion on a monthly basis (1st Sunday) with the addition of a bi-monthly, mid-week afternoon Communion Service (Tuesday at 2pm) for those unable through infirmity to attend regular Sunday services.  A community mini-bus is provided on these occasions.

Prayer Fellowship, which is open to all, meets fortnightly (Mondays at 10.30am) and is usually led by the minister and / or some of the members.

Community

Rainbows & Brownies meet within the church premises, as do a number of other community groups including dance classes, AA, and a keep fit group.

A Drumchapel Churches Partnership Children’s Club (Ess Kids) meets in the church and is attended by primary age children from the local area. Leaders come from within the Partnership.

Care for Others

We’re a small, friendly congregation active within the community.  Many of our members voluntarily work with local community projects, such as Focal Point (day-care centre), Stonedyke Neighbourhood Centre and BOBATH (fund-raising for disabled children).Others spend time visiting at the hospital, leading worship in sheltered housing and helping in a local day-centre for the elderly during school holidays.

Our pastoral concerns outwith the church focus on various charities such as Glasgow City Mission, CHAS hospice and Blythswood Care.  The ladies of the church also send personal items to the women of Zimbabwe.

Our world church contributions are made through activities supporting Commitment for Life (Bangladesh), Christian Aid and we strive to be a Fairtrade Church.
